Regarding the camp 5 trip, i can only request for edusave, if only i have confirmed the number of pax going for this trip..

 Hi Guys,

I've spoken to Philip and he's going to reduce the costs of the trip to $400. It'll be 4 days, 3 nights. We'll spend 2 days climbing outdoors on real rocks, then 1 day at the Camp 5 gym.

The price is higher than if you were to go with your friends & seniors because we are getting better accommodation and reliable transport for you. Everything else, except your own food & shopping, is paid for. The climbing areas that we are going are very suitable for beginners, it'll be easier & safer than the climbs at dairy farm.

1) Proposed Dates for the trip:

- Dec 26 to 29, or

- Dec 27 to 30

2) We need minimum of 8 people for the trip to happen.

3) You can use your Edusave. But need to come up with your own money first.

According to Jacob, this is roughly how the whole procedure goes:

1. Send in proposal for trip
(If intent to use Edusave, check if there is money in Edusave)
2. Wait for approval
3. Pay for trip with own money - collect Edusave application form
4. Complete Edusave application and send in to DSD (Department of Student Development)
5. Go for trip
5. Return from trip
6. Send in after trip report / article (student) - Confirm attendance for trip.
7. Wait for SP to clear paperwork and send to MOE
(Usually will take 1 - 2 month before MOE release money to school)
8. MOE clears application, release money to school, school write cheque and send to student.

However that will still depend on how much the individual student have in their Edusave account. Students can call this no. to find out: 62600777

Hope to hear your decision by this Friday. Cos tickets run out fast in Dec

UPCOMING competitions

Urban H!gh - Schools Edition
BorderX & Orchard Central present the school edition of Urban H!gh.
A combination of rock climbing, via ferrata climbs & brain teasers, the event is designed to be a fun climb for students without rock climbing specific experience.
Open only to students from age 12 years old. Secondary School, Polytechnics, Junior Colleges, Universities are welcome. Competitors do not need to be highly skilled climbers as the event is designed for a fun climbing time. Each team sent in does not need to be a school climber. In fact, we encourage students from any athletic background to come & try the climb!
Concurrent with the event is a charity component where profits from the event will be donated by BorderX to the BB Sharity Gift Box. Orchard Central has kindly agreed to match dollar for dollar, thereby doubling the amount received!
To sign up, each team of 6 will have to pay the entry fee of $250 at BorderX. Prize value is in excess of $5000 in a combination of cash, gift vouchers and merchandise. For more details, write in to info@borderx.com.sg or call 68844870.

Did you know?

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 10:55 PM

That :

1) there is a monthly subscription of Rock & Ice magazine at the magazine zone at our school library.

2) there is a significant number of rock climbing books at the Colours zone of our school library.

3) www.8a.nu is a good place to know the latest ascents of professional climbers, articles on climbing/conditioning, etc.

4) we have alot of rock climbing films/movies among our peers for you to ask for, especially Progression, Sharp End, Dosage Series,
King Lines, and ProTips.

5) before you buy your new climbing shoes, you need to know about your foot features and which shoe Really fits you perfectly (it's not just the brand and good qualities of the shoes only).

6) there is a specific way on how to wash and clean your climbing shoes so that it will last longer (Go google).

7) Yishun Safra is the best place to lead, but Putrajaya the greatest.

8) it is not really that hard to form your own climbing trip. Basic guide:
       - choose which place you want to climb, and its entrance fees, etc.
       - know how much it cost to travel to and fro your chosen destination and around that areas
       - find the cheapest and nearest accomodation for that climbing area
       - roughly put the dates you wish to go
       - estimate the expenditures (excluding food)
       - find companions to tag along
       - start saving money for it and start training
       - and finally, execute the plans

9) we should learn how to take care of the rockgym cause it's getting old.

10) we need to remind ourself to keep the rockgym clean cause it's getting sick.

11) we should not just stick to our small world at the rockgym and should learn to experience other climbing styles from other climbing schools by going to other climbing centres.

12) most of us seniors started as noobs, and had to put in alot of efforts to become stronger (hence, we realised our lack of capabilities and had gone to do something about it with actions, not words).

13) if no one attempts to do anything about something, then don't complain if that something bothers you (so go do that shit things together).

14) you must go take control of your lives because no one will always be there for you.

15) if you don't care about others, no one will care about you.

16) too much of our time was wasted spending on facebook

17) if we do not know how to give back to society, so how can we have the guts to ask for something from it.

18) if we do not learn how to run SPRC club now, then who is going to teach you later?

19) YOU need to take that first step

20) I wrote this so that we remember some of the things worth mentioning.

Thursday's training

  • Sep. 22nd, 2009 at 5:22 PM

 Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the delay.

This week training will be at Climb Asia, from 12noon to 3pm, on Thursday (24 Sep).

Year Ones
- Those who attended last week's session have shown that they can tie-in to the rope & belay a top-rope climber.
- So this coming training, you'll learn how to lead climb and belay a lead climber
- If you know any friends who have attended the past training sessions in school regulary, please invite them to join us this Thursday. They can revise their tie-in & top-rope belay.

Seniors
- Last week, I demonstrated dynamic belay. So this week, we'll try that out. And of course, revise your lead climbing & belaying.
- We'll do the above latest by 2pm, at the outdoor wall. Before that, I would really appreciate if you can help to guide the year ones. Thanks! =)

Equipments to borrow from the school store:

-          Harness

-          Dynamic Rope (The long yellow ones or the blue/red/brown ones) >> Think some of the seniors borrowed one or two of them, so just bring what you can find in the cupboard. But make sure it’s not the condemned ropes.

-          Quickdraws (the ones with 2 carabines/snaplinks  attached onto a sling) >> Bring as many as you can find. Will need no more than 20.

Payment details

- $6 per person without equipment rental

- $8 per person inclusive of rental of harness & belay device

For all of you who turned up last week, thank you very much. I think you've enjoyed yourselves =) However, I feel bad for the inconvenience and the mess about the equipment. Perhaps we can all work something out? Those who went down the school to get the equipment shouldn't end up paying the extra $2, although some of you are really magnanimous about this =) And, maybe you can split the extra equipment cost (eg. $5 rental for rope) among everyone? These are just my suggestions.

So hope to see you guys on Thursday. We are having a star guest, whom I'm not revealing for the moment =)

It'll also be good to catch up with some of the seniors, those whom I have not seen for a while!

Oh ya, please let me know if you are attending or not. Help pass the email around please, cos I don't have everyone's email address. Thanks!
